Vulnerability Creates Possbilities
II often hear about being vulnerable, showing your vulnerability and how that affects peoples’ lives. The definition of vulnerability per Wikipedia is "the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally."
The definition above makes a great deal of sense when people have a wall that protects them from being open about their vulnerable aspects of their lives. As human beings our first instinct is to protect ourselves and our loved ones. So if being vulnerable means showing your weaknesses resulting in people losing confidence and belief in you, and providing an invitation to get attacked and disempowered, then it makes perfect sense to have a wall in front of you to protect yourself. But what are the possibilities that you are missing out on by protecting yourself behind that wall?
How about we shift from being vulnerable from a lens of weakness to a lens of abundance. It's an opportunity for many possibilities. Showing vulnerability in safe spaces creates a deeper connection and stronger bonds with people, trust and loyalty, and a safe space for people to be open. People are then able to resonate with you and your stories, which creates a sense of connection, belonging and understanding, and in return, they feel a great deal of trust in you. If you are a leader who is looking to have great self-motivated teams with a strong sense of belonging, being vulnerable is as important as being helpful and compassionate towards your team members. It fosters a culture that is open, where people feel comfortable to open up and are more likely to stick around.
Being vulnerable in a safe space also creates opportunities for personal and professional growth. It allows a deeper connection with other people, who in return empathize you and are open to supporting you. The chances of people showing their compassion to you is higher when you are vulnerable.
In conclusion, true growth does not exist without vulnerability. How vulnerable as you as a leader?
